EKOS Crashes a lot Randomly most likely due to FitsViewer - by: Vamosi

Hi Jasem,

I came across an issue with EKOS the other day. It crashes a lot, very randomly. I narrowed it down to exposure downloads. The log is spammed with "[ org.kde.kstars.fits] - Reading FITS file buffer" until it finally crashes.
I was able to reproduce it in the latest nightly yesterday with the simulator. I need to resolve the issue, because I'm worried that the sensor in my camera will crack from thermal shock every time this happens.

I hope, I am screwing something up and you can help. Logs attached!

All the best and thanks in advance,
Florian

Question about timezone data - by: wvreeven

$

Hi,

Now that I live in Chile I was checking the timezone data settings for Chile and noticed that they are wrong. The TZrules.dat file in the KStars sources contains this

#"CL": DST starts 2nd Sun in Oct, reverts 2nd Sun in Mar (4:00)
#(Chile)
CL Aug 2Sun 04:00 May 2Sun 03:00

The first line contains wrong info. Chile DST starts 1st Sunday in September and ends 1st Sunday of April at midnight. The third line doesn't make sense to me at all. What are the items supposed to mean? I suppose that CL means Chile, 2Sun the second Sunday and 04:00 and 03:00 the times at which the change takes place. But Aug and May? As a matter of fact all other entries in the file have those strange months as well.

Does anyone know why this is such? And also, how could I best request a change for the DST start and end dates and times for Chile? Is posting here enough or should I open an RFC somewhere else? If appreciated I could push the fix myself.

Guiding issues - by: Piggled

Hello. I had major issues with my guiding the other night. With Ekos it would get worse and worse and worse as time went on. In PHD2 I was able to keep the RMS around .5 anyone have any idea what’s going on with the ekos? Should I uninstall and reinstall it? I really do love this program but living in San Francisco means I get very few clear good conditions nights. So fighting a program is not how I want to spend them.

Stellarmate app update? - by: Frodo 57

Is there any news of when we are likely to see an update of the Stellarmate app from the Google Play Store as it does not run under Android 9 being version BETA 1.9.14(Bundle v42) and the Stellarmate site says it won't run under Android 9.

Thanks for any information.

indi_qhy_ccd crash with KStars 3.4.1, macOS Catalina - by: tompfe

Hi all
Yesterday night we finally had a clear night but I could not capture any photos. After updating to KStars 3.4.1 I unfortunately did not test if my equipment work properly before going out, big mistake.

Immediately after starting INDI the indi_qhy_ccd driver crashed.
Neither the main camera (QHY376C) not the guide camera (QHY 5L-II) could be connected. The log file which I attach shows the message "INDI driver "indi_qhy_ccd" crashed!", log level was set to verbose.
There is also a message "Driver indi_qhy_ccd: dyld: Library not loaded: @rpath/libqhyccd.6.dylib"" which could point to a problem, but I could not resolve this.

Is there something missing in my installation?

Thank you for your help
Thomas

I upgraded Kstars and now I get this error on my Macbook (OSX 10.13.6) :

Astrometry.net uses python3 and the astropy package for plate solving images offline. These were not detected on your system. Please go into the Align Options and either click the setup button to install them or uncheck the default button and enter the path to python3 on your system and manually install astropy.

Has this been addressed yet?

Autoguiding aborted when it is not....? - by: mlarsson

Hi!

I'm a bit confused by this. Running Scheduler, and exposures are aborted with the message "autoguiding aborted", then restarted. I use PHD2. But the guding was NOT aborted, not that I can see. And no reason for it, a clear star and working well.

Anyone can help me understand what is going on here?

Logs attached from Kstars and PHD2.

Aborting PHD2 guiding during autofocus - by: hy

I currently guide with PHD2 (seems to work well for me, not experienced with the internal guider).
I autofocus every time I change filters, which is typically every ~30 minutes.
Honestly, my guiding and autofocus have been working reasonably well, but I've been wondering about the following:

There's a checkbox to suspend guiding when autofocusing, that I currently don't check.
My question concerns that checkbox.

If one doesn't check the checkbox (that is, if you don't suspend guiding during AF), then as I see it, that could add noise to the autofocus process (e.g. the mount might be moving during the autofocus exposure).

If one does check the box (e.g. suspend guiding during AF) then, since AF can take a couple of minutes, there's some chance the guide star will drift sufficiently such that when re-enabled, PHD2 will not be able to find the star, and PHD2 would abort guiding. (I suppose one can grow the PHD2 search region...).

What is the recommended procedure?

HiPS DSS streaks - by: khobar

Hi folks,

I just enabled HiPS overlay with DSS colors, and for the most part it looks gorgeous. However, the sky is also filled with pixel anomalies, and when you zoom in some resolve into streaks, sometimes two or three parallel like at M97, for example. They look weirdly like my pics when an airplane flies through.

What are these and can they be disabled/gotten rid of?

ISS Tracking - by: Lucas

Hi everyone,

This is my first post!
Please excuse in advance my newbiness, as I'm new to the astronomy field.

I would like to ask the community if someone has by any chance already experimented tracking the ISS using a GOTO mount (I am considering an EQ6) and if yes, what kind of setup is expected using INDI.

Do I need to write a custom client to send instructions to the server or can I use already made tools? I will probably use a TLE from which I can derived Az-El profiles.

Thanks a lot for your ideas!

Horizon Data - by: RogueSquadron

I read in old posts from 2016 about a horizon module to take local horizon constraints like neighboring buildings into account.

I could not find it in the latest KStars version. Is this module still around? Would be very handy to incorporate this in the scheduler's calculation for the best targets.

Cheers

Rock64 Resurrection - by: rlancaste

Last year, some of us were trying to get a Rock64 to work well with INDI & KStars on Ubuntu-MATE. We had lots of trouble, but the main issue was a black screen any time we tried to remotely access it. That ended up pretty much being a show stopper, even though we got mostly everything else to work. So I gave up on it for awhile. Then when I was revising my scripts over the last 2 weeks, I tried it again, and it still had troubles with VNC even using a different version of ubuntu.

So today, I thought I would try with a different distribution. So I tried Armbian Debian on the Rock64 and in fact the VNC connection worked great!!! So I adapted my script to make a new one specifically for Debian systems like the one I had running on the Rock 64. github.com/rlancaste/AstroPi3/blob/master/setupDebianSBC.sh . It works!

it might be useful for astro imaging yet!!

Thanks,

Rob

Looks like one can get Ekos to run now on the RPi4 using Ubuntu MATE at 64 bit.

Huge improvement over the Pi3.

EQ-6 and PEC - by: miles.in.the.sky

Hello,

I've done some research about EQMOD PEC and Indi, but can't find anything about using PEC and EQ-6 in Ekos.
Actually you can use PPEC with Indi with mounts like AZEQ6 or EQ8.
But with EQ-6 it isn't PPEC but SPEC. And it seems that Indi donc support it, am I right ?
But what I would like to do is making a PEC file for my mount with PEMPro on Windows and then use this PEC file with Indi, is this possible ?

Thanks you in advance for your answers !

INDI focuser driver for Waveshare Stepper Motor HAT for Raspberry Pi - by: kross

Hello all!

I have written a new INDI driver, for the Waveshare Stepper Motor HAT. I've been using Radek Kaczorek's driver for the Adafruit Motor HAT for a while now, and while it works, I came across this Waveshare HAT which looks to be a bit better.

Advantages of the Waveshare Stepper Motor HAT versus the Adafruit Motor HAT:
  • Real stepper driver, a Texas Instruments DRV8825
  • Up to 1/32 microstepping, for super quiet and smooth focusing
  • Adjustable current limiting
  • Doesn't use i2c
  • Can power the Pi and the stepper motor with a single 12V connection. No more 12V and 5V dual power to the Pi!

Even with 1/32 microstepping, I can get very reasonable speeds, since we're not using i2c, but are just triggering a single GPIO pin every time we want to step the motor. At 1/32 microstepping, I can get a full revolution of a 1.8 degree stepper motor in about half a second. 1/16 or 1/8 microstepping will, of course, be 2x and 4x faster, respectively.

From a programming standpoint, controlling the stepper is quite simple, and they include sample C code (unlike Adafruit which only includes Python code, which must be ported to C). My driver code was heavily inspired by (read: stolen from) Radek Kaczorek's original astroberry-amh driver.

Anyway, the code is here. If you do try it out, drop a note and let me know how it works out for you!

Astrohat - An open hardware RPi Hat for astronomy equipment - by: ppapadeas

$

Hello all,

For those of us that are having at the heart of our astronomical setup a RaspberryPi it has been for long now an idea to be able to centralize some critical monitoring and control functionality rather than having extra boards and equipment around. Power boxes are great, and they come in various flavors from many companies on the market. Unfortunately they are either lacking functionality, are expensive for what they are or simply are not open source enough for my taste. That's why I decided to spend some time and design a RaspeberryPi 4 compatible hat that includes the following functionality:
  • 4x 12V switchable outputs @3A each
  • 2x 12V PWM switchable outputs @3A each
  • 1 adjustable 6-12 V output @3A
  • Current and fault monitoring for each channel individually
  • Temperature, Humidity and Pressure sensor port (for an external readily available module)
  • Automotive grade electronics and design (to ensure reliability on all environments

Everything seems to fit nicely on a RPi hat form factor. Attached are some renderings of the design so far.
I designed everything on KiCad and the board designs are released as open source hardware (CERN-OHL) at this repository:
gitlab.com/pierros/astrohat

I am posting this here with the intention to solicit feedback and potential contributions to my effort.
The design can be considered complete for v1.0 and I plan to order some boards soon for testing and software development. I envision a daemon running locally on the RPi and an indi driver to communicate with it.

How does the feature set seem to people? Anything obvious missing?
Would people be interested in a small production run?

Once the first boards arrive and I can verify functionality and placement of ports, I plan to also design a case (probably an aluminum enclosure for the Hat together with the RPi).

Any ideas, feedback, comments are highly welcome!

ps. as a side note, I would really like to see more open hardware projects in the domain of astronomy (amateur or not) and see a flourishing community around them.

Which Usb Serial Shutter for a Nikon D90 ? - by: Vasconet

Hi to all,

I should buy a "Usb serial relay/shutter" for my Nikon D90, for exposures > 30 seconds.
I searched in the forum but I have not understood well which type is working or not.

Can I ask which adapter you are using for your Nikon DSLRs ?

Thanks in advance !
